Boateng bemused by Bayern exit claims on eve of World Cup

Germany international Jerome Boateng has been left bemused by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stating that Bayern Munich are open to offers for the defender. Boateng admitted last month he is keen on testing himself abroad, having struggled with Manchester City in the Premier League in 2010-11, and the desire for a transfer is still present according to Rummenigge. "I don't hide the fact that we have a financial threshold, but it won't be low for sure. But I know that Jerome is thinking about leaving," the Bayern chairman told Sport Bild. Boateng is preparing for the World Cup in Russia, where Germany's campaign begins on Sunday against Mexico, and insisted his focus is solely on the international tournament. "That is not an issue right now. It's about the World Cup now. I do not know why these statements were made," he told a news conference. "We are here in the national team, there is a World Cup. Everything else is not an issue for me. I'll say it: I'm just concentrating on the World Cup." Boateng missed the end of Bayern's Bundesliga campaign due to a hamstring injury but was still selected in Joachim Low's squad.

Ter Stegen calls on Barcelona to bring Thiago back from Bayern

Marc-Andre ter Stegen wants Barcelona to turn to a familiar face in their summer transfer business and re-sign Thiago from Bayern Munich. The Spain international graduated out of the famed academy system in Catalunya to make over 100 senior appearances for the Camp Nou side. He was, however, lured to Germany in 2013 and has become a key component in a Bayern side which has delivered him five successive Bundesliga titles. Thiago only committed to a new contract through to 2021 last summer, but Ter Stegen is hoping that Barca will make moves in the next window to bring the 27-year-old back to La Liga. The Germany international goalkeeper told Sport Bild: “I would like to have Thiago at Barca. His playing style suits us and from our viewpoint he is an interesting player. "Thiago is a special type of player. He definitely would offer us different possibilities. If a transfer happened, it would be brilliant both for him and for us.” Bayern have hinted that they could be open to offers for Thiago, despite maintaining that no formal approaches have been made as yet. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, CEO of the German giants, told Sport Bild: “No club has contacted us, nor Thiago. We still plan with him. However, I must say the midfield is stacked. “We have three or four places for nine players. The squad is great, but if we sell players, I don’t rule out that we will do something in the market.” Thiago made 31 appearances for Bayern across all competitions in the 2017-18 campaign, but did face criticism from a club icon in the spring which fuelled talk of a possible summer switch. Lothar Matthaus said: “Thiago hasn't made the difference in the big games. I actually think he's good but he's been a shadow of his former self recently. “Thiago has disappointed me in the past few weeks. I don't know where his head is. “With these performances, he's not a player for Bayern Munich. If a suitable offer is on the table, then Bayern should think about it.”

Bayern Munich open to Boateng offers

Jerome Boateng could be heading for the exit at Bayern Munich after chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed the Bundesliga champions are open to offers. Boateng last month admitted he was considering leaving Bayern to once more test himself abroad, having endured a disappointing 2010-11 season at Manchester City. City's arch rivals Manchester United have been linked with a move for the Germany international, and Rummenigge confirmed the club will not stop him from seeking a departure. "His thoughts about leaving Bayern still exist, as his agent has told me," Rummenigge told Sport Bild. "We know that this topic might be approaching. When a club is interested and Jerome says that he wants to join this club, we will consider it. "I don't hide the fact that we have a financial threshold, but it won't be low for sure. But I know that Jerome is thinking about leaving." Boateng has struggled with injuries over the past three seasons and missed the end of Bayern's campaign due to a hamstring issue, but he was still included in Joachim Low's Germany squad for the World Cup. Low said that Boateng does not appear distracted by his future and is focused on helping Germany defend their title in Russia. "I haven't heard about that, I didn't read anything and I don't care at all what happens after the tournament," Low said of Boateng's future. "There have always been situations where players change their team after a tournament. During a tournament there are situations with clubs that create interest around certain players. "What I can say after the training sessions is that Boateng worked incredibly hard. He worked hard on his fitness levels when he came back on the first day of training, he made an incredibly good impression and also since then."

Man Utd win banter battle with Bayern as pre-season friendly is announced

Manchester United have announced that they will face Bayern Munich in a pre-season friendly, with the two sides stoking the flames early with some gentle trolling of one another on social media. Two heavyweight outfits in the European game are due to meet at the Allianz Arena on August 5. The fixture will represent a final run out for Jose Mourinho’s men before they open their 2018-19 Premier League campaign. It will also close a busy summer for the Red Devils, with International Champions Cup competition set to take them back to the United States. United were already committed to meetings with Club America, San Jose Earthquakes, AC Milan, Liverpool and Real Madrid before adding Bayern to their schedule. That contest, which comes a week before the resumption of domestic duties, will see two fierce rivals locks horns for the first time since the Champions League quarter-finals in 2014. Bayern prevailed over David Moyes’ Red Devils on that occasion, but United still hold fond memories of a 1999 European triumph over the Germans which delivered a historic treble. They have taken the opportunity to remind their opponents of that stunning stoppage-time victory during a social media exchange which started out friendly enough. We’re  Busy  On holiday  Available in early August to visit a big club in Germany for a final pre-season game of the summer. Any takers? — Manchester United (@ManUtd) June 11, 2018 Bayern sought to troll United in their response, making reference of England’s rather shoddy penalty record in what is a World Cup year. The only takers we’re interested in are for good penalties, and as an English club, you guys probably wouldn’t know about that...  pic.twitter.com/7TJbc2V6lr — FC Bayern München (@FCBayern) June 11, 2018 The Red Devils had the last laugh, though, as they pointed out that no spot-kicks were required to get their hands on Europe’s biggest prize some 19 years ago. Just as well that we didn’t need them to beat you in the #UCL final back in 1999 then, isn’t it?  pic.twitter.com/fllThHNaDd — Manchester United (@ManUtd) June 11, 2018 There are unlikely to be too many fireworks when the two sides cross paths again in August, with friendly dates more about preparation than results, but United are looking forward to facing the challenges awaiting them. Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward told the club’s official website: “The team are facing some of the world’s toughest opponents over the course of pre-season, in top-class stadiums which will allow a significant number of our supporters to get closer to the team they love. “The competitive feel throughout the summer programme will provide a great platform for the squad, giving them the best possible preparation ahead of the new campaign.”
