Champions League won't take precedence for Chiellini

Giorgio Chiellini has said he will not be making the Champions League his top priority as he embarks on his first season as captain of Juventus. The 33-year-old defender has been a key player during Juve's domestic dominance over the last decade, playing in all of their seven consecutive title-winning seasons, but he has yet to taste glory in Europe. Juventus have not triumphed in Europe's top club competition since 1996 - losing five finals in the years following that victory - and Chiellini was asked whether mounting a Champions League campaign would be a primary concern in 2018-19. "No," he told Football Italia. "We will aim to win everything as always. "Now, we have the chance to relax with peace and calmness. Then it will be a great year just like the last ones, I am sure about that." Chiellini reflected on the departure of former Juventus captains and said he aims to leave a legacy as glittering as that of his predecessor, Gianluigi Buffon. "I am even older, it's true. I will miss them and it's normal that it's like that," he said. "We hope to leave behind good things for our team-mates, who can then continue when we are not there anymore."

Messi: Barca need Griezmann for Champions League

Lionel Messi says signing Antoine Griezmann would be a "brilliant" boost to Barcelona's hopes of winning the Champions League. The Atletico Madrid ace has long been linked with a big-money move to Camp Nou and has resolved to clarify his club future this week. Should he make the switch, Griezmann would add further star power to an attack that already includes Messi, Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele. Messi is excited by the prospect of uniting with the 27-year-old and believes he would go a long way to helping Barca become European champions for the first time since 2015. "I am in agreement that to win the Champions League again we need to have the best players. And Griezmann is one of them," Messi told Sport. "If the club sign him, brilliant. I don't know if he's the priority. That depends on the signing committee and the coach. "I can only say that to win the Champions League you have to have the best players. And he is very good." Barca cruised to a domestic double in their first season under Ernesto Valverde but those achievements were undermined by an ignominious defeat to Roma in the Champions League quarter-finals. Messi, though, is adamant the season was a success. "No," he said when asked if he would trade the trophies for a continental triumph. "Winning La Liga and the Copa [del Rey] is really important. It's not easy. "Despite what happened in the Champions League, the season was really good. "We had a great year with the double. It's true that the Champions League excited everyone because of what it means to win it, but there's no need to take anything away from what we have done."

Justin Kluivert's Ajax exit '90 per cent' done despite father's advice

Justin Kluivert's expected move from Ajax to Roma is "90 per cent sure", despite his father Patrick advising him to stay with the Eredivisie club. The 19-year-old winger enjoyed something of a breakout season in 2017-18, scoring 10 goals and setting up another five in the league. His dribbling ability and general play in the final third have seen him earn rave reviews, with several of Europe's biggest clubs said to have shown interest. Reports claim Roma are close to completing a €18 million (£15.8m) move for the Netherlands international, but his father – who also played in Italy for AC Milan – thinks it is too early for him. "I personally said to him maybe it's better to stay one more year at Ajax, to make some kilometres, to be important for the team," Kluivert senior is quoted as saying by ESPN. "He's 19 years old. He's still young, but he makes his own decisions, and as a dad, I have to stand behind all the decisions that he makes. It looks like he's going to leave Ajax. I think it's 90 per cent sure that he's going away. "If he's got the feeling to leave then he's got to do that, but he needs to know what things are coming on his way. "It will be difficult because if you're 19 and you're going to another country, it's not easy. You have to pick wisely what club and also talk really deeply about how his progress will be."

'Fekir's passed his medical... I think it's done' - France FA president provides positive Liverpool update

Nabil Fekir has passed his Liverpool medical and will become the Reds' latest signing, according to French FA president Noel Le Graet. When the deal was not made official on Friday, doubts were cast over the player’s fitness as he had suffered a serious injury to his right knee previously. However, reports in France suggested the delay may be down to Lyon’s accountancy practices wanting the deal to be completed in the new financial year. Le Graet offered a positive comment for fans fearful that the 24-year-old may not complete his switch to Anfield. "He's in the middle of negotiations and I think it's done,” he said. “I spent 15 minutes with him this morning [Saturday], and he's worried by the France team. He's in good spirits. "He passed his medical in Clairefontaine. That's logical, we've done it for other players.  "He was looking forward to it because the visit he had was positive.” Meanwhile, Le Graet believes the negotiations were all part and parcel of regular transfer activity. “It's always like that when you talk about a transfer: each tries to raise his price, to lower his price, when there's a hiccup someone wants it reduced. It's part of the game," he said. Finally, he confirmed his wish to see Fekir complete his switch to Anfield before the World Cup begins in Russia next week, something that the Reds are keen for but Lyon have said will not happen.  "It would be better for him, but he's not perturbed," he said of the No.10. Fekir is coming off a career-best season with Lyon, in which he scored 23 goals and created eight more, leading the Parc OL side to a third-place finish in Ligue 1 behind Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco. He has won a place in the France World Cup squad for his performances, though Antoine Griezmann is set to be preferred to him in the starting XI for Saturday's final warm-up friendly against the USA. Liverpool have already plundered Fabinho from Ligue 1 this summer, with the midfielder arriving at Anfield from Monaco. The Brazilian has previously urged Fekir to join him in England. The France international is expected to cost the Reds around £60 million (€68m/$80m).
