'Marseille would ignore €80m Thauvin bid'

Marseille president Jacques-Henri Eyraud claims he would ignore an €80 million ($94m) offer for Florian Thauvin. The 25-year-old has been linked with Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid after a stellar season in Ligue 1, in which he registered 22 goals and 11 assists in 34 appearances. Thauvin's form, which also earned him a place in France's World Cup squad, underlines the improvements he has made since struggling desperately at Newcastle United after leaving Marseille for England in 2015. And Eyraud has no desire to see the winger depart the Europa League finalists for a second time. "If there is an offer of 80 million euros for Florian Thauvin, I won't even look at it!" he told SFR Sport. "He's aware that OM have given him a lot of support. This is not the end of the story. There are still even more beautiful pages to write. We're counting on him for next season to take us even further. "He has had an extraordinary season. He's a great player. He has grown, he has matured, and the coach has helped him a lot to achieve his goals, even to surpass them. "The numbers speak for him and it's a great satisfaction to see him in [Didier] Deschamps' squad." Eyraud is also eager to keep head coach Rudi Garcia at Stade Velodrome beyond this season. The former Roma boss was appointed just three days after Marseille was bought by American Franck McCourt and Eyraud considers it among the best things he has done for the club. "He's one of my best decisions. I'm so happy to have taken it," he said. "He has character, a clear mental strength, he can handle a dressing room. He's close to the players and shows all the necessary authority. "He's had a great season and he'll continue with us." Marseille finished fourth in Ligue 1 and reached the Europa League final, where they lost 3-0 to Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid charged by UEFA over 'racist banner'

Atletico Madrid have been charged by UEFA for displaying what European football's governing body described as a "racist" banner during the Europa League final. It is understood that the charge relates to a flag displayed by fans inside Groupama Stadium that appeared to be styled like a Nazi war ensign. UEFA has charged Atleti, who won the final against Marseille 3-0 , with alleged racist behaviour and the setting off fireworks. Disciplinary proceedings have also been opened against Marseille, with charges relating to alleged crowd disturbances, acts of damage, setting off of fireworks, throwing objects and for delaying the kick-off. The case will be heard by UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on May 31.

Incredible Griezmann one of the world’s best – Lucas Hernandez

Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann has been hailed as “one of the best players in the world” by team-mate Lucas Hernandez. The 27-year-old France international showcased his talent in the Europa League final on Wednesday, as he scored twice to lead Atletico to a 3-0 success over Marseille in Lyon. The former Real Sociedad player took his goals with great authority to provide the platform for the Spanish side’s comfortable victory and Lucas hailed him after the match. “He’s incredible, one of the best players in the world,” he said. Griezmann has, however, been strongly linked with a summer move away from Diego Simeone’s side, with Barcelona leading the race for his signature. Lucas added his voice to those of his team-mates who do not want to see him move. “I hope that he’ll stay here for many years with us,” the Marseille-born defender said. While the forward is a sure-fire bet to be drafted into Didier Deschamps’ France squad for the World Cup on Thursday, Lucas is also hopeful of being named in the panel but says he will not allow it to define his season. “I’m really happy, proud of what I have done this season,” he said. “I’ve improved myself a lot, I’ve learned many things and I’ve acquired a good deal of experience. I hope I will be in it. “Where will I be when it is announced? With my family, my wife, my mum and my brother.”

He can't leave Atleti – Gabi hopes for Griezmann stay

Atletico Madrid captain Gabi hopes his team's Europa League success convinces Antoine Griezmann to stay at the Primera Division club. Griezmann was the hero in Lyon on Wednesday, scoring a brace to guide Atletico to a 3-0 win over Marseille in the final. But the France international is linked with a move to Barcelona in the close-season despite being contracted until 2022. Gabi said the 27-year-old's team-mates had already tried to convince Griezmann to stay and he hopes the trophy helps. "We already told him a couple of things... he can't leave us," he told reporters. "Let's hope today's performance convinces him to stay there." Asked if Griezmann – who refused to discuss his future after the win – was thinking about his decision, Gabi said: "Yes, of course. "Otherwise he would be in another team now." Griezmann has scored 29 goals this season, with the Europa League crown his second trophy at Atletico since arriving from Real Sociedad in 2014.
