De Boer on Inter failure in 2016: I had a rotten group

Frank de Boer claims that he was in charge of a "rotten group" of players during his ill-fated spell in charge of Inter in 2016. De Boer succeeded Roberto Mancini ahead of the 2016-17 season, signing a three-year deal, but was eventually sacked after just 14 games, having lost seven and won just five.  Inter went on to finish seventh in Serie A and were also bottom of their Europa League group. The Dutchman, now in charge at Atlanta United, feels he wasn't given the necessary backing to oust certain "rotten" individuals from the dressing room, which contributed to his poor reign at the helm. "I had taken on too much at Inter," De Boer told AD. "I wanted to change the entire structure and culture because that club hadn’t won anything for a long time. "I was dealing with a rotten group but wasn’t allowed to throw out certain players.  "I perhaps should’ve pushed a bit harder, because if you want to create change, you have to get a lot done right away.  "Maybe I tried to be everyone’s friend and that just wasn’t possible." Following his Italian disaster, De Boer then endured a startlingly short spell at Crystal Palace, where he was dismissed after just five games. Palace lost all four of their Premier League matches under his guidance without scoring as they struggled to adapt to the drastic change in style, having previously been under the management of Sam Allardyce. The Dutchman admits he could have done things better in those two spells, but feels he has learned from his time there. "I did good things at Inter and Crystal Palace, but also have to look at myself in the mirror and admit some things could’ve gone better.  "I learned from that experience." He took over at Atlanta in December last year and has managed two wins from his seven games in charge so far, although neither of them have come in MLS, recording two draws and a loss, leaving them ninth in the Eastern Conference.

Mauro Icardi still not available, Inter confirm

Inter have confirmed Mauro Icardi is not ready to return to action as he needs to build up his fitness levels. Icardi was stripped of the captaincy by head coach Luciano Spalletti last month and has not played since. The striker claimed to have been injured but Inter initially said tests could not uncover a specific issue. A contract row between Icardi, his agent Wanda Nara and Inter is reportedly behind the stand-off between club and player. But director of Inter's medical department Piero Volpi has signalled Icardi could be back in action soon. "He underwent the first stage of physiotherapy before an individual spell of rehabilitation," he told the club's website. "He's joining up with the group again, catching up with his team-mates. We'll evaluate his condition next week and only then can we say how long will be required before he's fully available. "We'll continue with the normal process, like with all of our players. You start with individual work, then you train in part with the rest of the squad before returning fully." Inter's form has been good despite Icardi's absence, with Spalletti's side beating AC Milan 3-2 in their last game to leapfrog their rivals into third place in Serie A. Volpi also gave an update on a calf strain suffered by Radja Nainggolan earlier this month, the latest in a number of injuries suffered by the Belgian this season. "Nainggolan is recovering from the problem that he had around 15 days ago. He's improving and we're finalising his individual plan," he added. "Like with Icardi, we'll evaluate him at the start of next week and see when he can return to training with the group." There was also good news regarding the fitness of Stefan de Vrij, who was forced to miss the Netherlands’ 4-0 European Championship qualifying win over Belarus on Thursday with a minor injury. "With regard to De Vrij, the Dutch doctor who we have an excellent relationship with like with all national team staff, informed us of the issue. It should only be a case of fatigue because the ultrasound tests came back negative."

'We need to qualify for Champions League' - Nainggolan keen to repay Spalletti faith at Inter

Inter midfielder Radja Nainggolan hopes to repay the faith of head coach Luciano Spalletti over the closing weeks of the Serie A season. Nainggolan has been restricted to 14 Serie A starts and missed Inter's dramatic derby defeat of AC Milan before the international break due to injury. That victory moved Inter above Milan into third place in the table and Nainggolan feels Spalletti's side are on track to meet their top-four aims. "We are strong, the group is united. We need to qualify for Champions League," Nainggolan said in an interview with Lega Serie A's YouTube channel. "I have a good relationship with Spalletti. He's tactically strong and very meticulous. "If he loves you, he shows it to you. He did a lot to bring me here and I hope I can finally start giving him so much back." Nainggolan is sidelined by a calf injury and the former Belgium international feels fitness issues have affected his progress since joining from Roma. "I was criticised so much because everyone expected so much from me," he added. "But I've had so many injuries, which I've never had in my career. "It was a great satisfaction to get back among the goals [against Sampdoria last month] and I hope I can keep going like this." Meanwhile, the agent of Nainggolan's Inter team-mate Matteo Politano believes the Nerazzurri will take up their option to turn his loan from Sassuolo into a permanent deal. "Politano to Inter is a deal we all wanted to happen," Davide Lippi said to Radio Sportiva. "Matteo is having a great season, which is what we expected. Inter were a big jump, that is true, but they invested in him because they thought he would make it. "I think he is a player you can count on. I don't think Inter will miss out on the chance to buy him: it will take around €20million to release him from Sassuolo. "We haven't talked yet as the season is long, but I don't think there will be any problems with Inter's option to buy, given the praise we have received."

Real Madrid & Barcelona set for battle to sign Skriniar, claims Inter star's agent

The agent of Inter centre-back Milan Skriniar has claimed that his client is subject to interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.  Skriniar, 24, joined Inter from Sampdoria in the summer of 2017 and quickly established himself as a key part of the Nerazzurri defence.  He has gone onto make 76 appearances for the Serie A giants, scoring four goals.  After two years though Skriniar's time at San Siro could be coming to a close should Madrid or Barca follow through and approach him, although according to his representative the former are at the front of the queue. "Real Madrid want to sign him, so do Barcelona; whoever can convince Inter to let him go will sign him this summer. Skriniar is a model professional," Mital Halis, a partner at the Star & Friends agency which takes care of the player's interests, told AS.  "If Real Madrid want him, they could get him but there are other agents who have a vested interest in taking players where they want". Reports that Raphael Varane could swap Santiago Bernabeu for Paris Saint-Germain have only heightened links with the Slovakia international.  But Halis added that negotiations will not be easy, while dismissing reports that one of Europe's most influential agents is influencing his client. "Mino Raiola, who represents Ibrahimovic and Pogba, might try to mislead Skriniar, but the player is on the books at our company - we have a contract with him," he said.  "Inter paid Sampdoria €28 million (£24m/$32m) for Skriniar and six months later, Manchester City came in with an offer of €55m. Now he is valued at around €100m (£87m/$113m). Any deal would certainly be complicated by the interference of intermediaries". One player that won't be joining Madrid any time soon, according to the agent, is 18-year-old Stuttgart defender Ozan Kabak. "Ozan Kabak is an exceptional talent, but he's not eady to join a top level club like Real Madrid. At the moment he is not on Madrid's list of candidates," he said. "He needs to get a few seasons under his belt and improve his game at Stuttgart before he goes anywhere else. There are a lot of steps he must go for before being in a position to join a side like Madrid."

'The situation is unpleasant' - Martinez wants resolution to Icardi drama

Lautaro Martinez has called for an end to the ongoing stand-off between Inter and former captain Mauro Icardi. Striker Icardi has not played for the club since being stripped of the armband by head coach Luciano Spalletti last month. But despite his absence, Inter climbed to third in Serie A with a thrilling 3-2 win against rivals AC Milan on Sunday. Martinez scored what proved to be the winner from the penalty spot but the Argentina attacker still wants compatriot Icardi back. "The situation is unpleasant, it is not at all nice for both Icardi and the group," Martinez said to TNT Sports. "However, we can only continue to train and play with maximum commitment. "We are employees and, as such, we must always be available to the club, but we hope that everything will be resolved as soon as possible. "Icardi, his entourage and the club will decide. We try to stay focused on our work." There was renewed optimism earlier this week that the situation would be resolved, as Icardi's agent and wife Wanda Nara said "peace is near." Icardi's return would be welcomed by a club fighting for their Champions League spot for next season.  Inter sit two points ahead of city rivals Milan, who are in the fourth and final Champions League spot, with Roma six points back of the Nerazzurri. Icardi has scored nine league goals in 20 appearances in 2018-19 thus far.
