Mane backs 'mentally strong' Salah to overcome World Cup disappointment

Sadio Mane says Liverpool team-mate Mohamed Salah has the mental fortitude to bounce back from his early World Cup elimination with Egypt. Tuesday's 3-1 defeat to host nation Russia, combined with Uruguay's 1-0 success over Saudi Arabia, saw Egypt dumped out of the tournament after only two matches. Salah had missed the opening 1-0 loss to Uruguay as he struggled to recover from the shoulder injury that curtailed his involvement in the Champions League final at the end of May. Although he started against Russia and converted a consolation penalty, Salah looked far from 100 per cent fit and cut a dejected figure at the final whistle, but Mane says his Anfield colleague is strong enough to recover from the disappointment. "I sent him a message about a week ago, he's a player who really wanted to play during this World Cup," Mane told a media conference ahead of Senegal's Group H meeting with Japan. "Unfortunately, he arrived suffering from injury and I was wishing him the best but he's a very strong guy mentally. "He did fight hard, he came back to help his country. Unfortunately they struggled but it's football, you have to live with it. "I wish him all the best for the future and at the moment of course it's normal for him to have difficulties, that's football." Mane will come up against former Southampton team-mate Maya Yoshida in Ekaterinburg on Sunday and revealed how the Japan defender turned down the offer of a reunion ahead of their clash. "I know him very well from Southampton and we were always together, chatting every day," Mane said. "We have an excellent relationship but this time I said do you want to meet me and he said no but it's fine, he's a good guy and that's fine. "I appreciate he's a professional and I know he's going to do everything to defeat me and I'll do the same on my side." A win for either side, combined with a subsequent draw between Poland and Colombia, would see the victors through to the last 16.

Lyon president reveals why he didn't sell Fekir to Liverpool & how Real Madrid could now sign him

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has revealed why he did not sell Nabil Fekir to Liverpool , and has confirmed that Real Madrid could now sign the France international. Fekir appeared all set to move to Anfield in a £60 million (€68m/$80m) deal prior to the World Cup, only for Lyon to pull the plug on the deal at the eleventh hour. Reports emerged afterwards claiming that Liverpool were spooked by injury concerns over Fekir, which were thrown up during the 24-year-old's medical. Aulas, though, says he merely got tired of waiting for the transfer to be completed, and has now suggested that Real could swoop for Fekir. "Nabil was close to Liverpool, I gave the green light on the move. "It didn't happen because it was taking too much time. Nabil is an exceptional player. "When the Liverpool move didn't happen, lots of clubs revealed their interest in him, not only Real Madrid and their new coach. "Everything is possible, but we want him to stay. But if he wants to leave, we will try and find the biggest club in terms of size and efficiency." Speaking to beIN Sports, Aulas added:  "The interest of Real Madrid? I believe it's true. There are no discussions, but I believe that there is interest. "I've not spoken any more with Liverpool." Fekir enjoyed a successful 2017-18 season, scoring 23 goals and providing eight assists in 40 appearances for the French club. The player's agent has since revealed that, despite the breakdown in negotiations with Liverpool, a move to Anfield could still happen . The forward is now in Russia at the World Cup with France, who are currently top of Group C, two points clear of second-placed Denmark.

Forsberg opens transfer door to Arsenal, Liverpool & Roma

Emil Forsberg has offered hope to the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Roma by hinting that he could be on his way out of RB Leipzig this summer. The Sweden international is under contract in Germany until 2022, but has suggested that a move elsewhere could be on the cards. Having impressed over the course of four years with Leipzig, interest in the 26-year-old has been building steadily. Leading sides in England and Italy are said to be plotting big-money moves, with Forsberg conceding that he hopes to be turning out for one of “the strongest clubs in the world” in the not too distant future. He told Fotbollskanalen: “I'm ready for the next big step. That's going to be very interesting.  “I am in dialogue with RB and always had a good relationship with the club.  “I have the dream of playing for the strongest clubs in the world.” Arsenal were recently urged to make a move for Forsberg by Anders Limpar, with the former Gunners winger eager to see a fellow countryman complete a switch to north London. He told Football.London: “If we get Emil Forsberg, we will be so lucky. “He’s the biggest prospect we have in Europe. He has been really good in the Bundesliga and has been outstanding for the national side. “If we get him, we would get a hell of a player who could produce points with assists and goals. “Please God, we should sign him straight away - if we can.” For now, Forsberg is away on international duty at World Cup 2018. He did figure in Sweden’s opening 1-0 victory over South Korea, but struggled to make his mark in that contest and is aware that he needs to offer more if he is to be of benefit in the present and a man on the move in the future. “I have a lot of pressure on me, but I like it,” Forsberg added. “I want it to be that way. When I'm not playing well, it's not good. So I have to be good. I'm trying my best.”

'Incredible' Firmino works like a defender, says Mane

Brazil striker Roberto Firmino has been hailed as an "incredible" player by Liverpool colleague Sadio Mane, with the two Premier League stars on duty at the World Cup in Russia. Firmino came off the bench for the closing stages of Brazil's 1-1 draw with Switzerland in Group E on Sunday, while Mane is expected to make his World Cup debut on Tuesday against Poland. Both have been in deadly form at club level during the 2017-18 season, in which Firmino scored 15 Premier League goals alongside Mane's total of 10, and they will be aiming to transfer those performances onto the international stage. While Firmino is yet to establish himself as a regular starter for Brazil, finding himself behind Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus in Tite's pecking order for the Selecao's opening game, Mane believes the work-rate of his Liverpool team-mate makes him a special player. "He's a hard worker and an incredible player," the Senegal international was quoted as saying by Liverpool's website. "He can see in his eye and what he's doing all the time on the pitch, working for the team like a defender and he's a striker! "This is special for him and it makes him a very, very, very important player for us." With Brazil failing to win their opening game at a World Cup for the first time since 1978, Tite's side are searching for improvements in their next group-stage matches against Costa Rica and Serbia. If Firmino manages to add to his six Brazil goals, it is likely the 26-year-old will celebrate with dancing - and Mane added that his Liverpool team-mate is always trying to get him involved in his celebrations. "Roberto is someone who likes dancing all the time and he always forces me to dance with him," he said. "I try my best but I'm not as good as him! He was talking to me, saying 'why don't you dance like we said all the time?!' and I said: 'Hey Bobby, I'm shy, I can't dance like you!' "He said 'come on my friend, we have to do it!' and we enjoy each one, so why not!"
