Inter Milan risk San Siro stand closure after Franck Kessie racist chants

Inter Milan have been handed a one-game ban for racist chants that was directed towards AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie. Before his substitution in the second half, the 22-year-old was subjected to racist abuse as the Rossoneri fell to a 3-2 loss against their bitter rivals on Sunday.   On Tuesday, the Italian Football Federation judiciary stated that supporters from the Curva Nord area of the San Siro were heard to have directed racist chants towards Kessie in the seventh and 39th minute of the encounter. Consequently, the FIGC have given Luciano Spalleti's side a one-game stand closure as punishment for the racist abuse but it will only take effect if their fans repeat such behaviour in any fixture. Kessie was replaced by Andrea Conti in the 69th minute, however, his substitution did not go down well as he was involved in a row with Lucas Biglia - a situation that forced both players to apologise to manager Gennaro Gattuso after the game. Early this year, Inter Milan were forced to two games behind closed doors after Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly was racially abused by supporters during a Boxing Day fixture at the San Siro.

AC Milan's Franck Kessie apologises for bench altercation with teammate Lucas Biglia

AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie has apologised to teammate Lucas Biglia after he was replaced in their 3-2 defeat to Inter Milan. Two minutes after Lautaro Martinez's scored Inter's third goal in the 67th minute, Kessie was replaced by Andrea Conti and he did not hide his frustration with Gennaro Gattuso's decision. While walking down to his seat, Biglia made some statements which angered the 22-year-old midfielder before they separated by other teammates. After the encounter, Kessie admitted that his reaction was a mistake and tendered an apology to the 33-year-old.  “It was the adrenaline of the match situation, I was frustrated coming off and really wanted to do more. I took it out on Lucas and it was a mistake, I apologised afterwards,” Kessie told SkySport Italia. “He is older than me and I should learn from him. I’m sorry.” The Argentina international also admitted fault in his statement and the ‘embarrassing scene’ created during Sunday’s game. “Franck knows what I said and we clarified the situation afterwards. We all want to win, but this is not something we should do in front of everyone. Maybe save it for the dressing room," Biglia said. “We above all feel bad for this embarrassing scene, I feel ashamed of it and apologised to the lads and Coach in person. It was not what we wanted, we embarrassed the club we represent and it won’t happen again." Meanwhile, manager Gennaro Gattuso described the altercation as a double defeat and has promised to take actions to punish the duo. "The defeat that hurts me the most was Kessie and seeing what happened on the bench," Gattuso added. "That is something I cannot accept with the way I see football, the way I see the team and the group ethic. “There has to be respect for everyone in the dressing room and it was just unacceptable. I am the coach, I have to take care of discipline in the dressing room and the players know how much I care about that. “You can criticise my tactics, but I built my career on respect, group ethics, representing the jersey, honouring the teammates who haven’t played for months. This means the world to me and that is why it is a double defeat. “I will have my say over the next few days.” Kessie has played in all but two of Milan's Serie A matches this season and he is expected to join Cote d'Ivoire national team ahead of their final 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Rwanda on Saturday.

'We’ve found a striker who can sort our problems' - Inter boss Spalletti purrs over Lautaro

Luciano Spalletti believes Inter Milan have "found a striker" after Lautaro Martínez played a match-winning role in the 3-2 Derby della Madonnina triumph against AC Milan. The Argentinian held his nerve from the penalty spot to give the Nerazzurri a 3-1 lead in the 67th minute and led in the line impressively in the continued absence of exiled star striker Mauro Icardi. Icardi was stripped of the captaincy in February and has not featured for Spalleti’s side since, amid mounting speculation about his future at the San Siro. Goals from Matias Vecino and Stefan De Vrij had given Inter the lead, before Tiemoue Bakayoko hit back for the Rossoneri. Lautaro’s spot-kick extended the lead, but Mateo Musacchio gave Gennaro Gattuso’s side hope with 20 minutes remaining. However, Inter held on to climb to third in the Serie A, overtaking Mlian, a result which left Spalletti purring over the 21-year-old front man. “Lautaro is powerful, has technique, confidence,” Spalletti said. “You just need to look him in the eyes and you can tell he can take on everything. “We’ve found a young striker who can sort a lot of things out for us. “We need to say well done to Lautaro for the penalty, well done to Perisic for the runs, well done to everyone for all you did. Bravo, Bravo to everyone in that dressing room. “I also say Bravo to the fans, because they let the team know that they were behind us even in moments of difficulty.”

AC Milan 2 Inter 3: Martinez penalty proves decisive in derby thriller

Inter beat bitter rivals AC Milan 3-2 in Sunday's thrilling derby to move above their neighbours in the Serie A table, with Lautaro Martinez's penalty ultimately proving decisive. Luciano Spalletti, who was sent to the stands in the closing stages, had seen his side win just once in five competitive outings amid the ongoing stand-off with Mauro Icardi, but they produced a focused display to end Milan's five-match winning Serie A streak. Inter were superior to Milan all over the pitch in the first half, with Matias Vecino's early goal setting the tone for proceedings until the break, before Stefan de Vrij made it 2-0 just after the interval. Tiemoue Bakayoko hit back for Milan before Martinez – who continues to start in Icardi's place – netted from the spot and, although Mateo Musacchio forced a tense finish, Inter just about did enough to move back up to third above their rivals. Despite Milan's excellent form coming into the game, Inter looked far more fired up at the start and went ahead after just three minutes – Vecino blasting in from close range after Martinez nodded Ivan Perisic's cross back into the danger zone. De Vrij doubled the lead in the 50th minute when he met Matteo Politano's cross with a towering header into the top-right corner. But the deficit was halved soon after – Bakayoko meeting Hakan Calhanoglu's free-kick with a fine header of his own. The lively Politano won a penalty from Alessio Romagnoli in the 67th minute, with Martinez confidently dispatching what proved to be the clincher. Musacchio thrashed home from six yards soon after – the goal standing despite Krzysztof Piatek appearing to stray offside. Milan were boosted again when VAR overturned a red card shown to Andrea Conti for a rash tackle on Martinez, the reversal sparking a reaction from Spalletti which brought about his dismissal. But Inter managed to hang on, with Samir Handanovic crucially blocking Samu Castillejo's late header and Danilo D'Ambrosio brilliantly denied Patrick Cutrone. What does it mean? Derby della Madonnina still a spectacle It is fair to say that neither Inter nor Milan are what they once were, but on Sunday they put on quite the show, scrapping like their lives depended on it and also producing a bit of quality now and again. These are not classic squads, but the derby remains a rollercoaster ride. Martinez holds his nerve Although chances for the Argentinian striker were not frequent, Martinez ran tirelessly, kept the Milan defence busy and showed admirable nerve to score his penalty. The youngster looks at home in this fixture. Piatek fails to shine in the spotlight With Icardi absent, the opportunity was there for Piatek to show who is the new star in town, but he offered precious little for a Milan side who rarely threatened aside from their two goals. Key Opta Facts: - Inter are unbeaten in their last six Serie A Milan derbies for the first time since 1999 (10). - Matias Vecino has scored the earliest goal in a Milan derby in Serie A since April 2011 (Alexandre Pato for AC Milan, after 43 seconds). - Inter have conceded seven of their last 10 Serie A goals from set-pieces. - Lautaro Martinez has both scored and delivered an assist in the same match for his second time for Inter. - Martinez is the first Inter player to find the net in his first Milan derby in Serie A since Antonio Candreva (November 2016). - Both AC Milan scorers tonight have scored their first Serie A goal (Tiemoue Bakayoko and Mateo Musacchio). What's next? Milan travel to Sampdoria on Saturday March 30 after the international break, while Inter host Lazio a day later.
