AC Milan banned from European football in 2018-19

AC Milan have been banned from participating in European competition next season due to a contravention of Financial Fair Play, UEFA have confirmed. The Rossoneri finished in sixth in last season's Serie A campaign, gaining a spot in the Europa League group stage for 2018-19.  But according to UEFA, the Italians have fallen foul of FFP laws and will not be able to take up their spot.  Milan will have the right to appeal, but if that is unsuccessful they will be expelled from the 2018-19 Europa League, although they would be eligible to enter again in 2019-20 if they qualify for either the Champions or Europa League.  A statement read: "The Adjudicatory Chamber of the Club Financial Control Body (CFCB), chaired by Jose Narciso da Cunha Rodrigues, has taken a decision in the case of the club AC Milan that had been referred to it by the CFCB Chief Investigator for the breach of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations, in particular the break-even requirement. "The club is excluded from participating in the next UEFA club competition for which it would otherwise qualify in the next two (2) seasons (i.e. one competition in 2018/19 or 2019/20, subject to qualification). "This decision may be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, in accordance with Article 34(2) of the Procedural rules governing the UEFA Club Financial Control Body, as well as Articles 62 and 63 of the UEFA Statutes. "Atalanta will qualify straight to the group phase. Fiorentina will enter the preliminary round." Milan returned to European competition after an absence of three years in 2017-18, reaching the last 16 of the Europa League before going out to eventual finalists Arsenal.

Fellaini sets date for announcement on future

Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini will reveal a decision over his future on Sunday, saying there is "no need to wait until the end of the World Cup". The Belgium international will become a free agent on July 1 if it transpires that he has not signed a new contract at Old Trafford, and a move away from the club would bring his five-year stay in Manchester to an end. Fellaini has been a divisive figure among United supporters since being signed by David Moyes in September 2013, making just 16 Premier League appearances in his first season at the club. He enjoyed a brief renaissance under Jose Mourinho, playing 28 times in the top flight in 2016-17, but his opportunities were limited again the following season after Paul Pogba's arrival. AC Milan sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli said Fellaini could be a target for the Italian giants and the player did little to cool speculation over his next destination when speaking in Russia ahead of Belgium's Group G match against England on Thursday. Fellaini told reporters: "I want to be free in my head and that is why soon I will announce where I will play next season." When asked whether he would make the announcement on July 1, the 30-year-old replied: "Yes. There is no need to wait until the end of the World Cup." Looking ahead to his country's final World Cup group game against the Three Lions, Fellaini suggested that his knowledge of the English game could give Belgium an advantage. Fellaini was an unused substitute in Belgium's 3-0 victory over Panama, before featuring in the second half of the Red Devils' 5-2 win over Tunisia. "If we want to go far in this World Cup we will need every player," he said. "Everybody is ready to play, everybody wants to play. "I know the Premier League very well and many England players also. I am proud that more Belgium players followed in Vincent Kompany's and my footsteps and are doing great now in England. "It will be an interesting game against England but it will be a strange one also because both teams are qualified."

Malaysian linked with investment at Milan

Li is on a tight deadline to find investors into the Italian giant after UEFA rejected both a voluntary agreement and a settlement agreement on Financial Fair Play. The Chinese national is in doubt of his debt to Elliott Management, who can take over the club in October if they’re not repaid the money they invested in the takeover of Milan. In three days' time, UEFA will decide if Milan can still participate in the 2018/19 Europa League campaign where the governing body will need to decide on the financial surroundings of the former Serie A champions. As such, Li has been reportedly going around trying to offer shares to multiple individuals. One of them is rumoured to be HRH Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim who is also the owner of Malaysian club, Johor Darul Ta'zim. Tunku Ismail has previously stated his passion for Milan and that if he should ever invest in a European club, the 2007 Champions League would be high on his list. Sky Sport Italia is reporting that super-agent Jorge Mendes is the one trying to negotiate the deal between the two parties as Li looks to increase his capital to €32m and cover the €303m loan owed to Elliott Management. Mendes has previously been spotted in Johor Bahru where Tunku Ismail resides and both have stated a preference to create a working partnership in the future although that remains unknown whether it will be this investment into Milan. Milan finished 6th in the Serie A in the 2017/18 season under the guidance of Gennaro Gattuso. They were knocked out of the Europa League in the last 16 by English club, Arsenal.

Roma and Milan keen on free agent Bruno Fernandes

Roma and Milan are both keen to sign Bruno Fernandes on a free transfer. The central midfielder left Sporting CP earlier this week, along with William Carvalho, Gelson Martins and Bas Dost, after terminating his contract at the club. The move comes after the club's players were attacked by fans at their own training ground in May, with goalkeeper Rui Patricio and manager Jorge Jesus also leaving. Fernandes has since been linked with Premier League clubs Tottenham and Arsenal, but Roma and Milan are in pole position to secure his signature. “The player has terminated his contract with Sporting along with other players. Roma and, with some distance behind, Milan are interested in him," his agent, Miguel Pinho, told laroma24. "The player is leaving for Italy but we have no meeting planned with (Roma Director of Football) Monchi.” Fernandes enjoyed an excellent season in 2017-18, scoring 16 goals in all competitions and providing 20 assists. The 23-year-old is a member of Portugal's World Cup squad with the Selecao set to face Spain in their opening fixture on Friday. Fernandes already has a wealth of experience playing in Italy, having emerged through Novara's youth system before joining Udinese in 2013. He then moved to Sampdoria in 2016 and spent one season at Stadio Luigi Ferraris before heading to Sporting last summer.

Man Utd target Bonucci dismisses transfer rumours as AC Milan aim for Champions League

Leonardo Bonucci has played down suggestions he could leave AC Milan in the upcoming transfer window. Italy defender Bonucci, 31, is reportedly the subject of interest from Premier League side Manchester United. He will be without Champions League football for a second successive if he remains at San Siro after Milan finished a disappointing sixth in Serie A. However, the Rossoneri skipper insists he has no desire to leave the club he joined from Juventus less than 12 months ago. "There is no problem whatsoever [at Milan]," Bonucci told Sky Sport Italia. "I hope these rumours will be put to bed so we can build something important. "We're aiming to return to the Champions League and to compete for big objectives." Bonucci made 51 competitive appearances in his first season with Milan, scoring twice.
