'Man Utd can upset Messi & Barcelona' - Forlan fancies Red Devils' chances

Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan believes the Red Devils can upstage Lionel Messi's Barcelona in the Champions League. United will face Barca in the quarter-finals next month following their dramatic comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are fifth in the Premier League but have enjoyed a resurgence under their former forward, while Barca are on track for successive La Liga titles. Forlan – who won the Premier League and FA Cup during his two years at Old Trafford – fancies United's chances against the Spanish giants. "Well they have a different game against Barcelona," Forlan said. "But they are a really good team and in football you never know what's going to happen. "They have a really good game in front, a difficult one. But they have a great team with good players. "United do really well at home, they could have a good possibility for elimination [of Barcelona]." Before the first leg at Old Trafford on April 10, United will face Watford and Wolves in the Premier League. After consecutive losses in the league and FA Cup, United return to action at home to Watford on Saturday while Barca – 10 points clear atop the table – welcome Catalan rivals Espanyol to Camp Nou.

'I'm playing better for Barcelona since Spain retirement' - Pique has no international regrets

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has no regrets about retiring from international football, claiming that his club form has improved since leaving the Spain set-up. Pique announced his international retirement shortly after the 2018 World Cup after the Barcelona man had won 102 caps for his country and lifted a World Cup and European Championship during his time playing for the national team. His final game for the former world champions was in the World Cup second round against hosts Russia, where Spain were eliminated via a penalty shootout. Pique believes he picked the right time to hang his boots up as he wanted to focus on prolonging his club career, which has gone from strength to strength since he took his final bow as a Spain international. "The decision has been made and I do not regret it." Pique told Sport. He added: "The people that don't want to understand it aren't going to understand [my international retirement] but I explained it all at the time.  "It was the right moment to leave the Spanish national team. I needed to rest." Eyebrows were raised when Pique appeared for the unofficial Catalonia national team on Monday as they played Venezuela, winning 2-1. Pique made his 10th appearance for the Catalonian team in that game but he is adamant that this does not signal a return to the international stage. "The Catalan national side only needed me for one day,” he said. “The two things have nothing to do with each other."  Pique has been in fine form for Barcelona this season. He has not missed a league game and feels the rest he gets during international breaks is helping him maintain his good form.  "It's not just me, but others [who don't play international football], but it's obvious in my case I am performing better for Barca since I left [the Spanish team]." Spain were in action twice over the past week, beating Norway 2-1 and Malta 2-0 to make a solid start to their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign as the national team look to usher in a new era.

Adekanye set to leave Liverpool as Lazio and Barcelona show interest

Liverpool youngster Bobby Adekanye has revealed that he will not be signing a new contract and claims Barcelona and Lazio are both interested in his services. Adekanye has become disgruntled with life at Anfield after not being given a chance to shine in the first team as well as being left at home as the team went on a pre-season tour of the USA. The Dutchman made his debut for Netherlands U20s against Mexico last week and has made nine appearances for Liverpool's U23s in the Premier League 2 this term but has not played since November. "I expected that I would get a chance at Liverpool sooner. Before I came, we talked about it. They said that if I had a good first season, I had a good chance of joining the first team," he told Voetbalzone.nl. "Due to injury, that did not come true. I had to undergo surgery at the start of my second season and then it is difficult to return.” Adekanye plays in one of the most competitive positions at Liverpool, with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah being two of the first names on the teamsheet every week and the starting XI looks a long way off for the youngster. He added: "Jurgen Klopp spoke to me and gave me tips. He said 'keep doing your thing'. But, in the end, I don't think I appeared in his plans. If so, I have to look for something else. That is disappointing and it has helped me decide not to renew my contract." Despite his lack of minutes, there has been no lack of interest in the 20-year-old with reports in Italy claiming he has been offered a deal by Lazio, as well as Barcelona reportedly looking to bring him back to the club. "That I would sign with Lazio is not at all the case," he said. "It's not over yet. They are one of the clubs that is interested, but it is not yet 100 per cent decided. "I also heard from Barcelona. In the Netherlands, Willem II came by. I can't name the entire list of clubs now, because then we will be busy tomorrow. But there is interest from, among others, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain. "In the summer I am going to talk about it with my family and business manager Junior Minguella, I am not worried that I will have no club."

'Ibrahimovic is best I've played with' - Boateng overlooks Barca team-mate Messi

Kevin-Prince Boateng said Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the best player he has played with as the Barcelona midfielder overlooked superstar team-mate Lionel Messi. Boateng has played alongside some of the world's greatest footballers, and Ibrahimovic stands out for the former Ghana international. Ibrahimovic and Boateng were team-mates at AC Milan, with the pair helping the Serie A giants win the 2010-11 Scudetto. Asked to name the best player he has played with, Boateng told Barcelona TV in a Q&A: "Zlatan Ibrahimovic." Boateng's answer came as a surprise, given he plays with five-time Ballon d'Or winner and Barca's all-time leading goalscorer Messi . The 32-year-old, who completed a shock loan move to Barca in January, was forced to dismiss suggestions of a past allegiance to Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo following his Camp Nou arrival. Boateng lauded Messi as the best player "in this world and every world" during his official presentation after past quotes declaring himself a Madrid fan and describing Ronaldo as the world's best resurfaced. Messi has scored 39 goals in all competitions this season, while Boateng has only made three appearances since swapping Sassuolo for Barca on loan. The Blaugrana are currently top of La Liga by 10 points, with a Champions League quarterfinal to look forward to against Manchester United in April and a Copa del Rey final against Valencia to take in the following month. Barca's first game back after the international break is a home clash with Espanyol on Saturday, with Messi expected to shake off a knock he picked up while playing for Argentina .

Lo Celso not thinking about Madrid or Barca as transfer speculation mounts

Giovani Lo Celso says he is unconcerned by interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid as he continues to make his way during his loan stint with Real Betis.  The Argentinian international was loaned to Real Betis in August as he joined the La Liga club on a season-long deal from Paris Saint-Germain.  Lo Celso was originally bought by PSG in July 2016, as he joined from Argentine side Rosario Central several months later after being loaned back to the club.  The midfielder made 48 appearances in all competitions for PSG in 2017-18, scoring six goals as the club went on to win the league, Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue.  But his future remains unsure and the 22-year-old is not yet sure of what his next step will be upon the expiration of his loan deal with Betis.    "A return to France? I don't know what may happen tomorrow. I try to focus on the present right now," Lo Celso told France Football.  "We'll see when the time comes. Barca and Real's interests, I don't think about that. I'm young and I still have a long career ahead of me.  "My main objective is to finish the season as high as possible (in the standings) with Betis."  He added: "You have to stay focused on what you're doing and continue to do what you're doing to keep moving forward. It's not good to think about the transfer window rumours."  Lo Celso has scored 12 goals in 36 matches for Betis, more than doubling the total of nine goals he'd scored in the four prior years to start his senior career.  Real Betis currently sit eighth in La Liga, only six points behind fourth-place Getafe.  Following the conclusion of the international break, Lo Celso and Real Betis return to league play with a visit to Rayo Vallecano as the club looks to bounce back from a 4-1 loss to Barcelona last time out.
